Fishermans Beach in Port Kembla, New South Wales, offers a serene coastal retreat characterised by its natural beauty and historical significance. This 500-meter stretch of shoreline is framed by rugged cliffs and grassy dunes, providing visitors with picturesque views of the nearby islands, including the Five Islands and a tranquil atmosphere ideal for relaxation and nature appreciation.
While swimming is not recommended due to dangerous rips and submerged rocks, Fishermans Beach is a favoured spot for fishing enthusiasts who often cast their lines from the shore or nearby rocks.
The surrounding cliffs and headlands, known as Hill 60 also serve as excellent vantage points for whale watching during migration seasons, offering a unique opportunity to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.
The beach’s proximity to Hill 60 adds a layer of historical and cultural depth to the visit. Hill 60 is home to remnants of World War II military installations, including gun batteries and tunnels, which provide a glimpse into Australia’s wartime history. Additionally, the area holds cultural significance for the local Aboriginal community, with evidence of prehistoric occupation found in the vicinity.
Access to Fishermans Beach is relatively straightforward, from Gloucester Boulevard, with foot traffic only (except for emergency services) decline down to the beach. There is lots of street parking available along Gloucester Boulevard and the nearby MM Beach. Visitors should be prepared for the decline/incline walk down to the beach and a short walk over uneven terrain to reach the shoreline, all visitors are encouraged to wear sturdy footwear. As there are no facilities on-site, bringing necessary supplies is recommended.
Due to weather conditions at Port Kembla Beach, Nippers can run at this location on Sunday’s throughout Summer until approximately 11:30am. Should you see a lot of pinkies and blue and yellow caps, expect this typically quiet location to be bustling with the nippers program in operation.
If you decide to continue your walk to the other side of Fishermans Beach (or Fishos as locals call it) and go up to explore further, you will arrive at Honeycomb Rocks .
